Beginner Rule
If Aatrox misses The Darkin Blade (Q) sweet spots — the outer edge of his sword swings — that's your best chance to trade back.
Aatrox is a fighter who excels at extended trades and healing through damage. He wants to hit the sweet spots of The Darkin Blade (Q) — his large sweeping attacks — to deal extra damage and knock enemies up. Many beginners lose by standing still during his Q casts or continuing fights after he starts healing.
Level 3 – Gains access to his full trading combo.
Level 6 – Ultimate increases damage, healing, and mobility.
First Item – Sustain and damage become much harder to deal with.

QWhat it does
Slams his greatsword in three sequential wide swings, each covering a different zone. The outer edges deal the most damage and enable his passive heal.
How to play against
Each swing has a bright ground indicator. Step into the very centre of each slam to dodge the heavy outer damage. Back away entirely if possible — the full three-cast combo is what kills you.
WWhat it does
Smashes the ground and chains the first champion hit, dragging them to the centre for a second, harder hit.
How to play against
Step out of the highlighted zone the moment it appears. You have about one second before the chain pull lands. Don't stand still near him.
EWhat it does
Dashes in a direction. Passively heals him whenever he damages you with abilities.
How to play against
His escape and engage tool. He'll use it to re-enter after you back off. Track the cooldown — when it's down he's committed to his current position.
RWhat it does
Transforms into demonic form, gaining massive AD, enhanced healing on abilities, and bonus Move Speed. Extends duration on champion takedowns.
How to play against
Disengage when he activates R — his healing spikes enormously. Don't fight him during the transformation window. Come back after it expires.

Used to maximize damage and healing in all-ins.
Deathbringer Stance: periodically his next auto deals bonus max-health damage and heals him. Watch for the glowing sword — that's the empowered attack incoming.
