Beginner Rule
Don't take repeated short trades against Lucian — that's where he's strongest.
Lucian is an aggressive marksman who excels at short trades and lane dominance. He wants to weave abilities between attacks to repeatedly trigger Lightslinger (Passive) for extra damage. Many beginners underestimate how much burst Lucian can deal in quick trades.

The Culling (R)
QWhat it does
Fires a piercing bolt through a target.
How to play against
He'll use Q to proc his passive double-shot. Back away after Q lands — the two follow-up autos hit hard.
WWhat it does
Fires a star-shaped missile marking and revealing enemies. Grants Move Speed when he hits marked enemies.
How to play against
After marking you he gains speed chasing you. Move after the W hits to reduce his speed window.
EWhat it does
Quick dash reducing ability cooldowns on hit.
How to play against
His dash has no target requirement. When he dashes aggressively he has no escape until it recharges — trade in that window.
RWhat it does
Unleashes a torrent of rapid shots in a direction for several seconds.
How to play against
Step sideways out of the spray. Terrain blocks it entirely. Move in and out of the spray angle.
E → Auto → Q → Auto
Standard trade combo.
W → E → Full Trade
Maximizes passive usage.
R → Cleanup
Finishes fleeing targets.
Lightslinger: after using an ability he fires two quick attacks. After every ability he procs two autos — his DPS in short trades is much higher than it looks.
