Beginner Rule
Take a moment to read Zaahen's abilities in loading screen or champion preview — understanding the basics removes much of his surprise factor.
Zaahen is still very new and developing in League's ecosystem, but generally functions as a highly mobile skirmisher who looks to outplay opponents through positioning and ability combinations. Many beginners lose because they don't understand what his abilities do yet.
Level 3 – Full combo becomes available.
Level 6 – Gains stronger all-in potential.
First Item – Damage and mobility improve significantly.

QWhat it does
Slashes twice on his next attack dealing bonus damage and healing himself. Recast delivers a knockup.
How to play against
The knockup recast sets up his full combo. Back off after the first slash to deny the follow-up.
WWhat it does
Stabs in a direction pulling enemies hit toward him.
How to play against
The pull brings you into melee for his full combo. Dodge sideways to avoid the pull.
EWhat it does
Dashes to a location and slices nearby enemies.
How to play against
His gap-close. Track its cooldown — when it's down he can't close distance safely.
RWhat it does
Rises then slams downward dealing damage and healing for damage dealt.
How to play against
Anti-heal reduces his R healing. Disengage from the slam AoE.
Engage Combo
Standard trade pattern.
Ultimate Combo
Maximizes all-in damage.
Mobility Chain
Creates outplay opportunities.

Darkin's Thirst: his basic attacks on champions restore health. He sustains from hitting you — anti-heal (Bramble Vest/Executioner's) reduces this.
